Bites of Architecture

About

What

Bites of Architecture is set up as a non-formal, autodidactic group which meets at regular intervals to discuss critical readings and exchange ideas and positions on contemporary architectural theory and practice, from the region and beyond. Food acts as the social binder at these gatherings, as it helps breaks barriers and allows people to engage and converse in a more forthcoming manner.

Why

The notion that ideas can exist in a state of invigorating debate fuels this platform, and furthers the urgency to constantly evolve through learning. In order to be able to control what one designs one needs to be conscious of their process. Therefore, while the conversation revolves around architecture, the platform doesn’t necessarily limit itself and understands the need to embrace the social, cultural and political discourse connected to the field. Only by being conscious of the process can one can claim responsibility of their own work.

How

The group meets every two weeks to discuss a selected artifact and an excerpt from a reading focused on a broader topic surrounding the object. The readings act as both an introduction and a catalyst to the conversation, while the artifacts ground the dialogue’s relevance to our time and place. Reading prior to the meeting is recommended but joining the discussion is open to all. The sessions take place in community spaces that are accessible to all.

The Organizers

Khalid Al-Tamimi, Farah Alkhoury and Tigran Kostandyan are practicing architects based in the UAE. They graduated from the American University of Sharjah with Bachelors of Architecture in 2016. The three have a shared interest in architectural theory and founded Bites of Architecture in late 2017. The first sessions took place in Khazzan Park – an unconventional landmark in the hyper cityscape of Dubai, and an apt symbol of the evolution of public spaces in the UAE. The sessions are ongoing and nomadic at present.
